Florida Cohort Southern HIV and alcohol Research Consortium Administrative and Research Support Core
The goal of the Florida Cohort is to assess how individual, clinic, and community level factors influence healthcare accessibility and utilization and HIV clinical outcomes across the state of Florida. We seek to be representative of all people living with HIV in Florida and will also include some people who do not have HIV. The study will help identify barriers to care and treatment that could be changed by future interventions to improve the health outcomes of Floridians living with HIV and other chronic conditions. We will work with the Florida Department of Health to continuously follow HIV viral load and CD4 counts from all persons enrolled in the cohort. The Cohort will also help build relationships between researchers from around the state.
This study has been carried out in three waves:
- Wave 1 took place between 2012 and 2013.
- Wave 2 took place between 2014 and 2017
- Wave 3 began recruiting participants in 2020
AIMS
Hypothesis
- To create a Florida Cohort that will combine patient-reported outcomes and existing surveillance data, so that we can monitor and improve health outcomes for persons living with HIV.
- To estimate the prevalence of substance abuse, common mental health conditions, and associated treatments within persons living with HIV in Florida.
- To determine the associations of substance abuse and mental health issues with key HIV care outcomes, including engagement in HIV care and suppression of HIV viremia.
- We hypothesize that substance abuse will be common in persons living with HIV, and that many persons with substance abuse will not receive treatment. Persons with mental health issues and substance abuse will have less engagement in care and less suppression of HIV.
Recruitment
Wave 2 enrolled 900 participants from Gainesville, Lake City, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Sanford, and Ft. Lauderdale. Wave three hopes to recruit 1000 further participants with a focus on mental health and substance use among people living with HIV in the state of Florida.
